were no computer jobs available. I decided to print a book on magic and sell it. I had no
clue how to do this. At the time, I was performing a trick called "Off." I had a friend
that had a camera take pictures of the trick and I typed up instructions for the effect.
For some reason I had the idea I should put each page of the book on a piece of
cardboard. Then, I got in my car and drove around town until I found a business that
had a sign above the door that said, "Printer." I took my boards into the business and
asked the person at the counter if he could print a booklet with what I had. He said he
could and told me how much it would cost. I bought ads in a magic magazine and
offered the booklets for sale. I was then in business.
I did a couple other books following this pattern of behavior. The production of each
book got better. Armed with several books, I decided to get a booth at magic
conventions and attempt to sell them. This became the way I developed a performing
persona. I began going to conventions and selling books. I would sit by the doors of the
dealer's room waiting for them to open. I would go inside and began performing my
material with the hopes of attracting magicians walking by. The hope was they would
watch me perform a trick and then buy a book. The point here is that I performed
constantly. I performed when no one was there with the hope someone would
eventually wander by and wonder what I was doing. Some conventions were four days
